Tips on Planning a New Year's Eve Wedding

From New Year's Eve
In recent year’s, New Year’s Eve has become a really popular date for weddings. As well as the obvious romance of marrying on the last day of the year, there are a lot of benefits to a NYE wedding. Firstly, everyone is in a celebratory mood anyway and most people have the next day off work.  People who live abroad are more likely to be home for Christmas and you may save on decor costs as many venues will have their own Christmas decorations up. However, there are some drawbacks but with some planning you should be able to overcome these. Here are Tink’s top tips for a new year’s eve wedding;

  1.      Book your venue as early as possible. New Year’s eve is a very popular date for weddings and hotels often host lucrative NYE gala balls so the longer you leave it the more difficult it might be to find the perfect venue. It’s also likely to be more expensive to have your wedding on this date and guests looking for local accommodation are likely to be charged premium rates.  It’s certainly worth considering alternatives to hotels for an NYE event such as a privately-owned country house which can be rented out in full by the wedding party or a modern and edgy space in the city where you can higher in caters etc to meet your every whim.
  2.      Find out whether the venue will have its own Christmas decorations and if you can make a visit the Christmas before and see how they look and how they will fit in with your flowers and planned colour scheme.
  3.      Speaking of flowers, most florists receive their last shipment of flowers for the year on the day before Christmas eve – that’s more than a week before the wedding date. So choose your flowers carefully and speak to your florist about how they will be stored and kept fresh for your big day. Also consider artificial arrangements which may well work out cheaper and be less risky.
  4.     Also the opening hours of other services such as hairdressers and beauticians are likely to be curtailed during Christmas week and those that are open or mobile providers who will come to your house/ the hotel on the morning of the wedding are likely to be very busy on new year’s eve so be sure to make your arrangements as much in advance as possible.
  5.     Talk to your band about how you would like them to do the countdown to midnight and what song they should play when the clock strikes 12.  Maybe surprise your guests by handing out sparklers or party poppers or, my personal new year favourite, Chinese paper lanterns. If you feel like pushing the boat out you could also consider a fireworks display  - weather permitting of course.
  6.      Oh yeah the weather! As we’ve seen over the past week, snow and ice can really put the kibosh on people’s travel’s plans at this time of year. It might be worth considering choosing a venue that’s local to the majority of guests – I know this isn’t always possible as the two families can be from different countries never mind about different counties. I suppose what I’m saying is to maybe think twice about choosing very remote locations for weddings at this time of year. It might be the most beautiful venue you’ve ever seen but if the roads to are impassable that’s not going to be much use to anyone.

Away with the Bridal Fairies

One of my new year resolutions is to spend more time writing material for the blog rather than just posting images all the time. As it's not the new year yet though, I just couldn't resist sharing these enchanting images with you which I found on the Cinderella project.

The Sweetest Christmas Greetings to You and Yours

Thanks to Eadoin on the fab City of Blackbirds for this delicious graphic

So are you trying to think of the perfect wedding/anniversary/Christmas/birthday gift for the woman who seems to have everything? I might have just the thing for you. Pretty as a Picture is the brainchild of two Irish graphic designers, Aibhe Ryan and Jane O’Sullivan. As well as bespoke letterpress and digital stationery , they create custom pieces of art and specialises in fabulous wedding dress portraits.
What a beautiful gift to give the recent or soon-to-be bride in your life – her dress immortalised in a stunning piece of art that can take pride of place in her home. Given that the first anniversary is the paper anniversary this would be an ideal gift from a husband to give his wife to celebrate their first year of married life (Mr Mc if you’re reading –hint, hint, nidge, nudge). I also think this would make a lovely gift from a bridesmaid to a bride. You can either surprise the lucky lady with the actual illustration by emailing photographs of the dress to Pretty as a Picture or you can present them with a voucher and allow her to pick the photographs she wants the illustration to be based on.

So I’m absolutely delighted that Aibhe and Jane are offering readers the chance to win a €150 voucher which can be used for a custom piece of art such as a wedding dress illustration. Entry is easy – just pop on over to their website and sign up to the newsletter and post a commentin the comment section below this post summing up Pretty as a Picture’s style. Aibhe and Jane will pick the best comment and the lucky person will either have a great treat for themselves or a fantastic present to give to someone this Christmas. Closing date for entries is Tuesday 21st December at 5pm (Irish time). Best of luck people!

A Puzzling Guestbook

Regular readers will know I just don’t see the point of regular wedding guest books. Your friends and family take the time to write you messages of love and best wishes on the happiest of days and these end up gathering dust on a bookshelf or worse at the bottom of an old box in your attic. I really think it makes far more sense to come up with creative ideas which allow your ‘guestbook’ to become a focal point in your home. This unusual idea from BellaPuzzlesToo on Etsy is a customised jigsaw in the shape of your choosing and can include your names, the date and location of your ceremony etc. Guests sign the jigsaw pieces.  In fairness, as €190 it’s fairly pricey but even if you aren’t going to splash that much cash I think it’s the concept that’s most important here and I’m sure with a little bit of creativity couples can come up with something just as interesting and as beautiful to display in their homes.

A little teaser..

We've just recieved our photos from our wedding photographer, Susan Jefferies and we couldn't be happier with them. I can't wait to share some of them with you but in the meantime here's a little teaser...
The reason I've chosen this one is because we have a very special competition coming up on the blog on Friday and it involves wedding dress images....hmmm I think I've said enough. Be sure and drop by on Friday to find out more.

Simply Perfect

I love the simple but classic paper details of this wedding from 100 Layer cake. These are all so easy and cheap to do and yet look stunning.

Today I'm loving...

this urban wedding I found on Ruffled . I love the hip feel of this wedding and how they have managed to combined the edgy cityscape withe the softness of an evening waterside ceremony.
The blue and red details are really wonderful too.

Picture Perfect

Congratulations to Harry and Shauna Kennedy who got married yesterday and who are featured on the RTE website today. The photo was taken by http://www.couple.ie/

They're Snow Cute

Okay I'm still loving the snow and it made me think what a perfect wedding favour a snow globe would make for a winter wedding.
My other favourite festive favours include these very DIYable mini brownie pops, snowflake krispie treats and personalised lollipops.  If you don't feel like investing some quality make-and-do time they are all available from Beaucoup.

A christmas gift to remember

Okay today's post isn't so much for brides or grooms to be. It's more for newly-weds or people trying to come up with Christmas gift ideas for newly-weds. I love these First Married Christmas Ornaments from Etsy. Of course most of these you could make yourself - DIY gifts are all the rage in this era of recession chic don't you know!

Today I'm loving...

this cure favour packet from Crafty Pagan designs on etsy.
For those of you feeling a little festive on the first day of December check out their vintage gift tags as well.
